Guess this would qualify as “Design Wall Monday”. Saturday morning was spent cutting 90 white squares for a QOV (Quilt of Valor) quilt I want to get done. Last summer I won a box of fat quarters that I had designated as a future QOV. Had no pattern in mind but wanted to have it somewhat be red, white, blue, and a yellow/gold to reflect the military theme. In the last few weeks Leah Day has been taking us through some quilting projects/tips as a quilt along. Her latest is a whole cloth quilt and I thought I would use elements of her quilting pattern in this quilt. Decided to do a “prototype” first and see if it would work. The floral lattice in this will be more of the color theme in the large quilt. This is just a little over 32″ square. Now, on to transferring the quilting design. The white squares were cut 7″, then cut diagonally. The strips are cut 1-1/4″ wide and inserted. That turned out to be the most efficient use of the fat quarter print fabric, as one strip (cut 1-1/4″x 22″ then cut in half) provided enough for 2 squares, which trimmed to 7″ square and will be 6-1/2″ finished. I didn’t want the white area to be so large that the quilt looked totally white. There will be a pieced border(s) on the larger quilt which will pull the red/white/blue/yellow theme out more clearly. Definitely a work in progress. Now, on to quilting…….

Very nice quilt design and fabric.
Yes, I wanted to come up with a design that would allow me to use Leah Day’s quilting motif. I have marked that quilt now and have enough confidence to begin quilting this next one. Will combine the micro-stippling with meandering so I can finish this in some realistic time frame!!! Thanks for stopping by;-D
What will you be quilting in the white squares?
Looks great! What a great opportunity for some fun quilting patterns. Imagine doing a different one in each of the white areas! I can also see this pieced with different fabrics for the X centers or even different pieced fabrics for the X center. Fun! :o)
Suzy, That’s a great idea, too!!! I like this simple piecing pattern well enough that I will be doing it again soon. My stash will provide me with tons of lattice strips for the X pattern. They have a really different look when each is a different color/intensity……looks more complex than it is, most definitely! Thanks so much for stopping by;-) Hugs, D.
Candy-Hi! I plan on doing the center portion of Leah’s whole cloth quilt motif. That’s the hearts and the woven squares surrounding them. It just fits in the white area with just the very corners of the one square actually going into the lattice. Have just finished putting the border on and will do the tracing in a moment……..Hugs,
Check out the next post for a clearer idea of my direction;-)
