Quilt overload!!………

Yesterday myself and 3 other quilty friends headed out on a short road trip to Rochester, MN, for the state quilt show at the Mayo Civic Center. This show has always rivaled the Paducah show for quality, originality and sheer number of quilts entered and vendors present, to say nothing of all the excellent opportunities to take part in workshops (taught by Ann Fahl, Maxine Rosenthal and Jane Sassaman, and others)  to suit every creative bent!! Lectures given by people like Debbie Caffrey and Darlene Zimmerman. Spaces fill fast! The quilts, well, here are some picture samples:……..to the right, an example of quilting, fabric painting then re-quilted! Beautiful! Color placement and quilting-perfection. Hard to keep one’s jaw from dropping at each and every turn. Each year the level/bar has been raised higher…..even when you think the pinnacle has been reached, there is another incredible vision! The quilting was something I was particularly interested in, having done the QAL with Leah Day. I was pleased to see that none of the quilting compromised the “drapability” of the quilt. Dense quilting was matched with the appropriate batting to produce a soft, perfectly textured creation.Batiks held a prominent place in a high number of quits reflecting current fabric trends. A huge “thank you” to the show committee, and all those behind the scene, who created such a successful event.  Will post more on what was happening  in the vendor areas in my next post.  Til then……………

  3. These are beautiful quilts. I had no idea Minnesota had a state quilt show. Is it always held in Rochester?

Yes, this quilt show is certainly a rival to any of the best!!! The location does change. Next year it is in Duluth. I am sure there will be pictures on their site soon. Can’t even imagine the enormity of the organization needed to accomplish such a task! Very enjoyable because of the helpfulness of those staffing the various venues.

Doreen, what a fantastic day out. The quilts you photographed are amazing. I Agree with ivoryspring, the last one is totally wonderful. Seeing work like this makes you want to get practicing and working on those UFOs and trying new ideas. Here in the UK there is a quilting show end of August in Harrogate, Not too far from where I live so I will be going to see that and hope to come away with ideas, instructions, some new “tools” and maybe a small amount of fabric!!

Yes, in addition to all the quilt displays that took your breath away, there were aisles of vendors everywhere you turned. Everything from longarms to thread to related notions and jewelry! Quilting is, truly, BIG business!!!! So glad you stopped by!-)
