“Out to lunch”……

Not  figuratively but really! A friend from the pharmacy (that I retired from 1 1/2 yrs. ago), Pam, and I headed North out of Winona towards the quaint, very active, Mississippi River town of Lake City for lunch at the Chickadee Cottage Cafe. A charming little place that has a menu to please both gals and guys!Years ago DH and I had been there for lunch but it was more of a “tea room” than a place for any type of hearty lunch. The “Chipotle Chicken/black bean/avocado/etc spinach-tortilla wrap was excellent served with mango salsa…yum!     Lake City, MN, is best known, possibly, as the “birthplace of water skiing”….self-proclaimed? A lovely river town located on Lake Pepin (actually, a very wide portion of the Mississippi River).
After finishing lunch, we headed back toward town, and a block off the highway (State Hwy. 61), to an antique store located in the historic Lake Pepin Pearl Button Co. building.I first read about this in the blog Minnesota Prairie Roots, where you can find more interior pictures. From there, we went across the street to here:This isn’t just your regular bakery. The bakery display case will grab your attention first but the specials written on the menu board are equally enticing. It’s artisan breads are all baked in a wood fired brick oven and once a month, on the first Sunday from 5:00-8:00 pm, they serve brick oven made pizza! THAT is definitely worthy of a bike ride in the near future for DH and I!! Although they do not have a website, Rabbit’s Bakery does have a Facebook page here. Pam and I shared a couple of the pastries (which were devoured before I had an opportunity for a picture!-( . One of the pastries was a French Bourdeaux Canele’, which has a soft rum flavored moist custard with a thick, somewhat chewy, caramelized dark brown exterior. So good……..Are we hungry yet???? And, oh yes, they serve a wonderful assortment of coffee lattes & cappuccinos  to accompany these heavenly treats. And so the weekend begins……..

New discoveries are always such fun and when they are not far from home and written about on a blog friend’s site….makes it more special!! What’s ‘out our back door’ often times needs to be pointed out to us by others who travel in as tourists!!! We are such curious creatures!!! That day was so lovely!

  2. OK Doreen, now I’ve got the Munchies 😀 Looks great!

  5. Alright, back to Lake City we go to check out both of these eateries. You’ve got me convinced. That chipotle chicken wrap sounds like something I would especially enjoy. Thanks for the link, too, to my blog.
