How high ‘s the water, Momma??……….

10.5’ and risin’!!! At Pettibone RV and Campground on the Mississippi River (La Crosse,WI)! Last eve, when we returned from our trek to South Dakota, we briefly stopped by home to clear out the car a bit before heading to the campground we stay in during the summer months. So far the number of days is ‘0’! It has been a case of watching the water level each day and hoping it remains low enough to place the 5th wheel on its cozy spot. Not so!!! Most of the seasonal campers will have to be removed by this afternoon. This is our son’s unit (just across the little road from our designated spot)… photo taken last eve…..

That is his patio area/bike, etc. with the river/back-water beyond that clump of trees and the motorcycle. It is the spot where his boat is tied up when in use. To give you an idea of what it looked like last summer, here is a shot of the boat and the steps down to the water……

His is the boat tied further away and his RV is just up the little hill/on the right edge of this photo! This morning he called us to come help him move the patio things and prepare to move the RV to higher ground ‘cuz the river is now here……….

Although we have had considerable rains, this high water is mainly from all the locks/dams (from Genoa, down river from LaCrosse, to St. Paul, up river) being closed and holding back as much water as possible to prevent worse flooding down stream, where there have been inches and inches of rain in the last couple of weeks, and in the last few days, resulting in some major down river flooding! So, for now, our lovely “get-away”, which looked like this last year……..

looks like this this year………….

Interesting days lay ahead, hmmmmm?

  1. Oh, my! You have to keep your eye on the water when it gets like that!

  2. daniellajoe says:

Wow I hope it retreats fast so you can enjoy that RV!!! And your bikes 🙂

    • treadlemusic says:

We do, also. We thought there would be a possibility of moving the RV to the site this week yet, but the river levels are coming up quickly with yesterday’s rain (flood warnings/watches today) and more severe weather/storms for today!!! We are all green and fuzzy!!!! LOL!

  3. ruthiequilts says:

You’re going to need a boat pretty soon… Stay safe!!!

  4. Oh my… I hope the waters recede soon! It’s definitely been a year of extremes…

  5. Valerie says:

Oh my, that water really rose up on you!!!! WOW!

    • treadlemusic says:

It “sneaked” up really quickly in a short time. Since that photo was taken it has receded a tenth of a foot which translates into a bit in the campground. Should be down far enough to put everything back in place by the weekend…….I hope!!!!!

  6. Teje says:

Hi Doreen! That’s awfull! I’m so sorry you can’t enjoy the summer you have been waiting so much! Is there hope that the water gets lower soon? Only good thing I find is that you don’t have a stabil house there and can move your camper. Hugs! x Teje

    • treadlemusic says:

You are so right……it is only a camper after all!! We might be able to get in by the end of the week…..for sure the weekend. I have those sunglasses at the ready………Hugs…..

  7. witchylin says:

Hope the water goes down quickly Doreen. Flooding is a problem here too. Our village had flooded houses last year. Hope you got your son’s home safe and the rain stops. Good luck with the mosquitoes.

  8. Jeanne says:

Glad you made it home from South Dakota safely and that you have everything moved to higher ground. We appreciate the locks/dams being closed but it is too bad that you all are paying the price. Hope it all works out soon.

  9. mtetar says:

My prayers are with you all including the community. May God share HIS Grace and Mercy upon you all for the best in this storm/situation. I’m believing HE will work it out for the good. Be Blessed Doreen! Mtetar

  10. We’re experiencing flooding too, Doreen, here at the campground after this weekend. Most of the water is coming from the streams and rivers north of us, where they are experiencing worse than us. The water is not disturbing our campsites as they are up above the riverbed but our boat launch area is under water. Hopefully this will be short-lived, for all of us!

  11. Oh no! Hope you get warm sunny weather soon!
Its just stopped raining here today and a warm day after 10 days straight of rain.

  12. I think you may need to invest in a houseboat.

  13. Amazing!! Gee for you folks, if it’s not snow, it’s the melted kind!! Take care.

We were just over there last Sunday visiting with my cousin in her new camper. It was so pretty sitting along side the river, birds flitting about singing in the trees. They were in 103, had 2 free nights that came with the purchase of their camper. Maybe we’ll run into you this summer. But sad to see how high the water has come up.

    • treadlemusic says:

We’re 322. Hope to be there a lot of week days….very quiet. The Boat Club has awesome food and a beautiful view of the main channel. Let us/me know so we can coordinate!!!!!

  15. Karen says:

wow, I think I would have got everything moved out there a couple days ago at least – that is a lot of flooding – just think of all those misquotes this summer. that will take awhile to dry out.

    • treadlemusic says:

I hadn’t really thought about the MN State Bird!!!!! LOL! Mosquitoes are always pesky there but, you’re so right!, this year is going to be unreal! It will take a while to dry out!!!!! 😦 Ugh!!!!

  16. Oh no!!!! I hope you can get it all sorted quickly Doreen! Good luck 🙂 Avis x

    • treadlemusic says:

Everyone in the “seasonal” area helps to make sure all in the “neighborhood” secure their RVs and belongings. It’s such a wonderful example of neighbor helping neighbor!!! We’ll see what tomorrow brings!! Thank you for your sweet concern…….blessings…….

      • That’s great news. There’s a real community spirit going on there. I hope the sun starts to shine soon and you can all top up your tans 🙂 Avis x

        • treadlemusic says:

Thank you so much for that “glass half full” positive comment!! LOL! My tan is totally non-existent at the moment. I have to remind myself that the sun is always shining above the clouds!!!!! Sigh……..

  17. l says:

Well, in the old saying, “Lord willing, and the creek don’t rise”, I guess prayer and crossed fingers are all we have left. I’ll work on those for you. Hope all of you stay safe, as dry as possible and you don’t lose anything.

    xo Linda

I think we got everything taken care of and moved to higher ground. Last year was such a drought that this reversal is keeping us on our toes!! LOL! This situation pales by comparison to the tragedies that others are experiencing……..for sure! Thanks for stopping by! Blessings, Doreen
