Is a small(er) one. It’s a table runner (18”x 68”) made from squares that never found their home in a quilt. You see, they were made by my BFF of 38+ years and quilting buddy, Alice. She passed away somewhat unexpectedly a little over a month ago. Her 3 adult children (also friends of mine) allowed me the privilege of organizing her quilt stash and seeing that it went to good homes. She was a very prolific and proficient piecer and quilter. In the coming weeks you will see some of her quilts being quilted for her grands. But right now I have 5 squares that her daughter, Carol, found amongst her things and wants put into a table runner. Today it found its way to my Sweet Sixteen, ready for the stitching…….
This project stared at me from the sewing surface! What to quilt!!??!! How to quilt it??!! Feathers were swirling in my head……but that’s what I always do! And on stars??? No! Really? Well, I started (not feathers) and then grabbed the ripper….ugh! Okey, I gave in and …. and….. well, take a peek at the progress made this afternoon……..
The above block will get a little more stitching in the center block…..maybe! Such fun…once I got “rollin’”! Updates to follow……….
Quilting and/or gardening buddies make the best friends. I love the feathers you put in the tablerunner, really nice!
Thank you so much for your kind comment. Feathers seem to appear quite frequently in my quilting……the whole quilting process is an obsession with me (just ask DH!) and feathers…..well, I really can’t come up with a strong enough word to describe my love of that motif!!! LOL! Hugs, Doreen
I’m so sorry for your loss. How very sad. I’m glad you get to do this for her family, though. It will mean so much to them, and what a blessing to get to touch your friend’s blocks and put your own signature on them, too. I love your feathers. Nice job!
Thanks so much, Steph and huge ‘Congrats’ on your new dept.job. The family wanted our local little quilt group (which Alice had belonged to since its beginning) to have her “stash” as a memory. She was a sweet friend for many years. I am so glad you stopped by! Hugs to you…..
Your quilting really sets off the blocks…. Sorry about the loss of your friend…
Thank you, dear Friend. It truly was a very special project.
Beautiful Doreen and so very special for the family. Thanks for sharing and so sorry for the loss of your friend.
Thank you for your kind thoughts. I just couldn’t post about it til now. Life continues onward……now containing an “Alice-sized” hole in it for many! Hugs, D
Doreen it is beautiful. Your work is amazing. Carol will love this and cherish it for years.
I think so, too. She’s due back here the end of July so will hold it til then, possibly.
The feathers are perfect Doreen!! Amazing what happens when we listen to the quilt!
Precisely!!!! I just have to remember to step back and take a deep breath and listen!!! Well said! Hugs, D
What a wonderful tribute to your dear friend Alice, to take up her projects, to carry on. This runner is beautiful, Doreen, and just perfect for this week.
It will be a treasured memory for her daughter. I have really enjoyed working on it.
I am so sorry for your loss of a friend and the loss to her family. I know they will all cherish the pieces you finish. And, oh my, your finishes are gorgeous! I love your feathers! I envy your artistic ability and skill! Your work will be treasured! ~Jeanne
Thank you for your kind thoughts. I still have thoughts of grabbing the phone to share the latest project, etc. It is extremely gratifying to be able to contribute to her legacy. Hugs to you on this gorgeous day……..
Really nice so far. I’m sure it will turn out great when you are done with it.
I feel better about it now. On some projects I just “over think” it……..I just have to ‘get to it’ and the stitches do seem to flow. I am sure this happens to all (it’s that “blank canvas” thing!!!!). Hugs…….
It is so sad to lose a good friend I am sure she will be sadly missed. Her quilts will live on thanks to you and others who have received some of her work and fabrics. The table runner will grace the home of her daughter and be a reminder of her Mother’s work. The feathers are just perfect and I feel Alice would be happy with your choice of quilting. You will enjoy being a part of quilts made by other people. Sweet Sixteen has more than paid for herself with the pleasure she gives you.
Well said, Lin. I do feel exactly as you stated. I am elated at the fact that the SS has worked out as well as I had hoped (actually, better!). Good to ‘see’ you….hugs…….
My Deepest Condolences to her family, and you. It is certainly of no surprise that her children chose you. They need to have the best work done in honor of their mom and to represent her well, and that is why they chose you.. I look forward to the finished project. Be A Blessing because you’re Blessed. Mtetar
Thank you, Mary. It is a special sewing task which I treasure, also! Hugs to you……..
Hi Doreen,
I am really sorry to hear about your loss. She definitely seems like avid quilter.
Beautiful table runner. You have done some awesome quilting on it! Love those feathers.
Thank you so much for your thoughtful words. Alice was truly an amazing friend, mother and wife. She is missed by many. It is a real privilege to be working on her piecework! Hugs……
You are creating heirlooms for you dear friends family.
I am so thankful that they will be in her daughter’s home, too!
Love the quilting… her daughter will certainly treasure this table runner.
I think it will be well used and loved, too! Blessings……..
It’s hard to believe you’ve only had it since November! I think your friend would have loved the feathers. I know I sure do. They are so lovely. I can’t wait to see your other projects from her blocks/tops.
I am so glad you stopped by! and I do appreciate your comments;-) Sometimes I think processes just “click” with a body and it would seem so with this last machine addition. Even though I move the fabric rather than the long arm, it is like sketching/drawing to me. Very enjoyable. Blessings and hugs…..
love it! you have accomplished so much with your sweet sixteen since you got it.
Ya know, I feel like it’s been in my sewing room so much longer than just since last November! I so love doing other’s quilts (since I really can’t complete my own quickly enough to satisfy my ‘obsession’ for such stitching! As I have said before, I so enjoy all the processes in creating a quilted piece but the quilting is my fave!! Happy weekend to you!!!!
Oh I absolutely love the table runner idea AND the quilting is perfect. Love love love!!!
I am so glad, cuz I’m sure some feathers will appear on your projects!!!! Hugs……..
