Back home…..with great memories…………

As many of you know, DH and I spent last Monday through Friday in western South Dakota, hiking the hills, visiting with friends and enjoying many of our favorite food haunts. Originally, we had planned on trailering one of our motorcycles out and doing some riding but the weather was far from conducive (or trustworthy) for that activity!! Oh well, maybe in September…………….

The hiking was perfect, however. Overcast, cool (low 50’s) and a bit drizzly……….wonderful!

The first trail was one that we had wanted to explore for years and managed to do a couple of miles out of the 109 miles that make up the Mickelson Trail system. The trail is one that was once the site of an active railway system in the late 1800’s. There are 4 tunnels, wide flat walking area and not more than 4% grade. Perfect for that novice hiker (us!) or the first outing of the year (us, again!!!!).

We found the trailhead at Mystic, SD, and began our short (in miles) saunter. Tuesday,SD 003

A friend of ours gifted us with custom carved walking sticks which made the walking so comfortable….even on level terrain! Tuesday,SD 008

And so ended our first day in one of the most gorgeous areas that we love so much!

Oooh! Doreen, what a fun trip! We need to do this soon I think… Well, OK, when my knee is fully healed maybe! Love that you shared so many pictures. You both look great!

  2. I remember bicycling through old railway tunnels in Wisconsin and they were not nearly as inviting as this one. Think long, dark and scary.

The shorter of the 2 was more unpleasant…..water dripping through from the overhead, powdered lime spread on the walk way and a smell that made me glad it was a very short tunnel!!!!

  4. Looks like you’ve had a fun time!

This looks like a wonderful hike, my guy and I enjoy exploring as well….maybe someday we’ll add this to one of our places to visit 🙂 Thanks for sharing.

That looks like so much fun! We’re in shorts and tank tops here-97 degrees so I am jealous of the sweats!

Wow!!!! Those temps are unreal!!! At the moment it’s the low 70’s and overcast. Rain “spits” off and on. Really nice!!!! It’s been in the low 80’s the last 2 days……above “normal”/average for here. The weather in the Black Hills has kept the residents guessing, too!!!! Have a great day!!!! Hugs…………………….

  7. This looks awesome! What a great way spend the weekend!

  8. What fun! Jim and I have graduated from beginner to advanced beginner hikers, and are loving every minute of it. The trail system you found looks great, interesting landscape. I do like a bit of challenge on the footing, but a smoooooooth, easy trail is fun, too.

    Welcome back.

(Blushing) Thanks so much for your sweet words! The hiking ‘thing’ is somewhat a new thing but is addicting and we hope to do more in the fall! So glad you stopped by for a visit!! Hugs……………….

Loved  the pics from your first day on your trip!!!!  The walking sticks are good…not only for balance but those pesky snakes that might be around.  The tunnels look amazing and the colors of the rocks are ones that should be in a quilt.  Of course there is blue in them…one of our favorite colors.  Have a fabulous Memorial Day!!!

    Love, Kathy

Grew up in Nebraska, LOVE the Black Hills. Miss being able to get out in the wide open spaces – thanks for letting me live through your blog! 🙂

I am thrilled to share our adventures with you. The Black Hills would be our home if not for family located here in S.E. MN!! Please, stop by tomorrow for another glimpse into our brief visit!!!! Hugs………………………..
