A Recipe…………..

For a really enjoyable day. Put together 4 quilt-obsessed gals in a motorized vehicle, add 1 beautiful sunny Autumn day in Iowa and 3 quilt shops. Mix all together with generous amount of laughter and visiting.

The day started early…..7:00a.m. (earlier for one Kathy, who needed to get to the starting point by driving an additional hour!). Heading south to Decorah, a slight jog to Calmar and continuing to Jesup and Merry’s Stitchins. You have seen this shop before, here, and it has proven the saying…….”If you build it, they will come”! The location is accessed by several gravel roads, surrounded by cornfields, 1+ miles outside the little town of Jesup, IA. It began in Merry’s home……..and then she built this beautiful building right across the driveway and the house became a retreat center!!! Photo highlights………..001 002

Above are just a few of the wool felt samples. Along with a generous number of fabric bolts, the quilts adorning the walls are amazing! 006007008009010011012013   This last photo was taken from a mezzanine level/area used for making up the many kits that are available!!! I picked out these little project “seeds”………035  I do have some thoughts on their direction………

On to Independence and Quilter’s Quarters. 4,000 bolts of perfectly displayed fabric and a wonderful selection of notions/threads to fill every quilter’s need…..and then some!!!!!014015016017018019020021022023  Oh, there’s Kim……..we can say “Hi” in a moment. I’ve always said that it would be quite “dangerous” for me to work in such a place as my paycheck would find its way right back into the shop! In Kim’s words, she “volunteers” for “payment in kind”…….would work for me, too!!!! Only a few small “treasures” from this lovely spot……….036  I’m still in love with Asian prints! 1 Yard of loveliness!037  Spied some fat quarters…….only $1 each!!! No resistance here……

Next up…..on to Oelwein and Lou Ann’s Quilt Garden and Retreat Center. We almost missed this one, except for the sharp look-outs in the back seat!!!!!! A quick U-turn and we were parked right outside the front door!!!!024  Lou Ann was there to share many pleasantries as we ooh-ed and aah-ed throughout her inspiring spot.025026027028  She really was all smiles, once she recovered from our “bursting on the scene”!!!!029030031032033034

We continued our journey north and home. Not sure of the total miles but the smiles and the ringing laughter will continue for days ahead. Thank you Kathy, JoAnn and Carol for your apt “guidance” deciphering the various possible routes and bearing with the numerous U-turns!!!

Til next time……..it’s back to that which we all love so much……..the quilting continues……………………

  1. Three great stores! I’ve been to the first two. A lot of stores aren’t worth the drive to go back to, but they are! Lots to choose from. Glad you had a good time.

  2. What a glorious trip. You must have felt as if you were in quilt heaven.

What a wonderful day! If one isn’t sewing, the next best thing is shopping for inspiration and supplies with friends!

Oh there was some really great things to see at those places. My sister and I are planning a big shop hop for next month and I can’t wait.

Thanks for the camera kudos! Since I was told by a shop owner last June that there were absolutely NO photos allowed in her shop(!!!!), I have made a point of asking and giving them my card with my blog’s link and telling them it’s free advertising/sharing. They like that a lot!!!!!

Wow. Lots of eye candy (and no calories!). Thanks for sharing, Doreen.
