Eek!!!! Killer Bees!!!!!……….

Where??!!!!??? Well, right here in southern Texas, but not to fear ‘cuz these are of the quilting kind. They’re easy to locate….just follow the “buzzing” every Thursday morning in a community hall in the community next door to our Encore “Sunshine” park. A very lovely walk from our little abode (see here). This is one awesome energetic friendly group! (Can you tell I’m excited??) Our (yes, “our”…of course I just had to jump right in!) esteemed coordinator/facilitator/leader is a gal named Jan…..would you like to say hello?? …………….

Jan (holding mic) makes sure all flows smoothly and everyone is informed of the upcoming fun and, oh yes…..she holds that mic and passes it to all who share!!!! Thank you, Jan!!!! Many great “quilties” to share so let’s begin. I’m not in the habit of always sharing the names of the gals (especially when there are 50+ of them!!!!!), so onward………….(be sure to grab a cuppa and sit back and enjoy…)

This is one of the most beautiful “One Block Wonders/Stack and Whack” quilts. So subtle and elegant! When choosing the fabrics for this process, the ones chosen for the above are, perhaps, the opposite of what’s recommended but the results are stunning!!!!! She admitted to (mis)cutting some of the strips needed wider than what was called for which resulted in larger ‘blocks’ and here are those beauties……………….

An upcoming workshop that will be led by Ms Jane called “4-Patch Posy” (below)…….

IMG_4856

The border fabric is part of the fabric line coordinates and includes the stripe with the floral. The sashing is the stripe ‘fussy cut’! The blocks are this fabric (her backing)…

IMG_4860

Next up, a queen sized finish that, also resulted in a dresser topper (don’t cha just love that top pillow cover portion???)……

IMG_4863IMG_4864

A “Disappearing 9-Patch” pattern takes on 2 very different looks and it’s what happens when the stack of cut up blocks threatens to produce a larger-than-desired quilt! So…..make 2 quilts….and make them different!!!!!!

More “One Block Wonder” piecings…

IMG_4881IMG_4883

The above photo is just a few of the blocks the gal had completed. Cutting through 6 layers may, at times, take a toll on hands/wrists!

IMG_4897

Lots of other handwork going on, too,,

Above right….a knitting caddy. So clever.

IMG_4889  IMG_4890Little ‘preemie’/neo-natal hats…sweet!

IMG_4888 IMG_4887

The neck wrap/”scarf” (above, right) is fabric, not knit or crochet.

And some “up-cycling” going on. A Hawaiian shirt becomes a fabric bin and apron……………….

IMG_4894 IMG_4895

A Boy Scout shirt becomes a tote (with some added BS fabric)……

IMG_4896

A photo collage frame tray now has a pieced “orphan block” fabric backdrop………

IMG_4893

And….speaking of aprons, a while back a workshop was held transforming a man’s shirt into a “butcher”-style apron and, so without further ado, I present to you our own “Killer Bee Rockettes”………………..

Are y’all inspired???? I do hope so! You’ll be seeing lots more in the coming weeks, so…..yup, stay tuned……

Hugs and blessings from (at the moment) South Texas!!!!

  7. Linda says:

Doreen, Thank you for sharing all that fun with us! I am very interested in the bed quilt that incorporates the pillow cover into the quilt top. Can you give any more detail (pointers) on how to do that, e.g., measurements, etc.? Failing that I suppose just drawing a diagram and figuring it out for myself might work too! Hope you have a great visit in Texas!

I would approach it with the idea that the basic quilt dimensions have adequate “drop” (sides/foot) and measure how much you would want additionally to tuck under/cover the pillows and placement of any additional design piecings/borders. So much depends on pillow size, border width, block/piecing size that would determine a pleasing outcome.

  8. Am I surprised that you fit right into this quilting group? NO. Emphatically, no. What a splendid show-and-tell. I look forward to more of these from Texas.

“Hang tight”! With weekly gatherings (the community meeting room is a lovely size and most gals are living in smaller quarters) for sewing and demos, I’m sure I’ll have much to share!!!!!

  9. Jackie says:

It seems to me that you are right where you belong. Looks like a fun group of ladies to share in the love you have for quilting. It’s snowing here in Rochester tonight, do you miss it?

    • treadlemusic says:

Don’t miss the driving in it, or the ugly rain/frz drizzle, but sure miss everybody that direction. Ppl are so great here and the “Killer Bees” is truly an amazing group of caring gals. You are so correct…..this is the southern home we should have! Warm hugs being sent, Friend………..

  10. It looks like you’ve found a very lively group there. Have fun.

  11. KerryCan says:

Why am I not surprised that you’ve gotten right into the mix in your new home?! Looks like fun!

    • treadlemusic says:

LOL! Guess I’m not either. It’s just that there are several quilt/sewing groups close by and this is the first one I visited!!! After attending a meeting last March, Jan was so great to keep in touch with me (e-mail) with the summer’s “goings on”.
