Was yesterday (June 18th) in the neighboring town of Peterson, MN. Generally, a sleepy little settlement along the Root River Bike Path that offers many of those sweet by-gone days activities that are enjoyed by folks today. You know……like time spent at the café, sipping coffee with friends, maybe a trek to the post office (a few steps from the café) or, for the more adventuresome, a day on the Root River which flows under the road on the edge of town. Turning off Hwy 16, I spot the all-important sign announcing the day’s event…..”Gammel Dag Fest” (“Good Old Days”, for those not ethnically inclined/informed…….)….. I make the turn and cross the bridge and see the welcoming signs ahead…… A not-so-sleepy day today! Now, I will tell you that many activities filled the agenda but not mine! Why??? Well, I had only a very limited time to be here and I used it wisely…………not on the beautifully manicured homes……… not on tractors, parked in driveways awaiting the parade and other displays….. but……. THIS………… A small unassuming notice on the door to Grace Lutheran Church announcing a quilt display! BUT, not just quilts … “Vintage Quilts”………….!!!!!!!
The display was not a large one but wonderfully documented and easily viewed.
I think I can detect a certain “commonality”/repetition in the names that appear on each quilt description. See if you don’t agree. Please, note that clicking on a photo will enlarge it to be better viewed!
Most were pieced, tied comforters….lovingly put together and used! Recording another tyme, another day, when travel was more limited and social times did dual duty: a quilting “bee” was a time of catching up on news and finishing that all-important bed covering for the upcoming cold months.
